Hello I live in a new build 3 bedroom house. The devices connected to the network/internet
2 mobiles
2 laptops
2 firesticks
4 ip cctv cams
2 nest protects
Nest thermostat

I am currently running my internet through a netgear D7000. With the recent news of Internet logging etc. I am looking to use a VPN (ip vanish) on my router.

Option 1 - replace the d7000 with a netgear DM200 modem and a custom firmare on one of the following netgear routers r6400, r7000 and r8000 . Any suggestions which router I should choose?

Option 2 (not sure if this option is possible) - keep the d7000 and use a develo 1200+ power line to share the internet connection with a one of the netgear routers r6400, r7000 and r8000. By doing this I can have a normal UK connection to use I player and use specific apps that check location. With the other router I can use another country with the vpn.

Option 3 anything you can suggest

Thanks for any assistance
Mike

You could I suppose use your current netgear as a modem using pppoe to get the data to the router.

This is pretty easy setup if you want to all the traffic to pass though the vpn. Gets tricky when you want some to bypass. You can configure most vpn router clients to allow some types of traffic to bypass. This is not always straight forward though some have gui but some you must manually edit the iptables file. If the number of ip to bypass is small it will work well, routers do not have huge storage and large lists of ip tend to slow the cpu down.

You might be able to do it with your PC. Simpler way would be if your PC has 2 nics (wireless and wired will work also). You would connect both to the vpn lan and the main router lan. You would then use the ROUTE commands in the pc to decide to which router you send the traffic.

I need to have Netflix Amazon prime and a few others through isp where the rest of my traffic through the vpn. I thought I could have used the d7000 and another router to achieve this?

You can but the problem still exists how do you somehow tell your equipment that you want netflix to run over the ISP and other traffic to run vpn.

This has to be configured someplace. There are a number of ways to do it but pretty much either your pc need to solve this problem or one of your routers does.

I have something similar and I am lazy and run 2 different computers one connected to the main router and the other connected to the VPN
