Basically I thought this external drive had data on it but when I plugged it in it had one partition that needed to be formatted and also two unusable partitions. Did the drive get corrupted

Solution
Figured out the problem the external drive was formatted to be used with its external... pluggin so when I directly plugged it in as a internal drive it showed as multiple partitions and such but when it's plugged into the external piece it shows as normal
Probably a fault has developed with it rather than corruption, not uncommon on external hard drives on account of the small PCB within the enclosure (the bridge chip which converts the connection interface to USB, it can fail long before the actual drive fails).

May be you can remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it to the PC like you would an internal one, though that's not always possible if the drive has a proprietary interface. Worth a try though.

Ok I'm back to the house and it's plugged in internally it says one partition is healthy and has a letter path but won't work and says the partition needs to be formatted the other two partitions say it's unallocated
