Will a Xeon work with this P55-motherboard?

Hi,

Recently I was given an old desktop PC, and I have upgraded it a bit with a few spare parts from previous builds. It handles most of the games that I play really well, but I believe that the CPU (i5-750) is a bit on the short side. As I am not willing to spend loads of cash on this machine, I started to look for other, better CPU. I came across the i7-870, but I think that it is a bit too expensive. I then heard about the Intel Xeon X3460, that supposedly also fits the socket on my mobo (1156 with P55-chipset). The CPUs apparently perform the same, only with the X3460 being the cheaper alternative. Weighing in the fact that this computer is an OEM-PC, I am still not sure if it is entirely compatible. Please have a look at the specifications of the PC here:

So to my question, is it possible to replace an i5-750 with an Intel Xeon X3460 (or another 1156 Xeon CPU for that matter)? Should I buy an i7-860/870 instead or not do anything at all?

Thanks,
Axel

UPDATE: I bought the CPU and installed it a few days ago. The motherboard, even it is an OEM board, recognized it immediately. All I did was install the latest BIOS update and hope for the best. The Xeon works flawlessly and has this far been a good upgrade for me.

You can always use Intel's compatibility tool to check their processors' compatibility against their chipsets. I've linked it here.

After reviewing the tool every p55 board they list is compatible with the Xeon X3460, but that comes with two caveats that you're probably already aware of.

1.) You are only able to utilize DDR3 memory. I know you said it was an older PC and comes with DDR3 out of the box, but I included this in case you were considering a memory upgrade and were going to upgrade to DDR4 (I've made this mistake too many times).

2.) Intel states on their website that it cannot guarantee the compatibility with OEM board and that the manuafcturer would be able to say definitively yes or no I have thus been unable to locate any specific information from HP.

What's the model number for your motherboard ?
