Hello,

I just got the MSI GEFORCE GTX 1050 TI to replace my old EVGA GTX 560. I wanted to put it in my MSI 990FXA-GD80 mobo.

So I uninstalled my old video drivers and took the old card out.

I load the new one into the mobo and plug everything back in. After turning on the power and starting the computer up, the mobo will not post and gets stuck on BIOS error code b2. My monitor is black (but showing a connection to the computer) other than it says B2 in the bottom right corner and has a _ in the top left. b2 reads on the LED lights on the mobo.

The new graphics card seems to start up as the fans turn on for a while and the LEDs are all on. After 30 seconds or so the fans will turn off but the LEDs stay on. Nothing seems to change after this.

I've put the old card back in and everything is working like before. I've begun looking for solutions but am not too sure. I have considered updating my BIOS but I dont know if that will really solve the problem and I've never done it before.

My BIOS version is E7640AMS V11.4.

I have been looking at the updates on this page:
https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/990FXA-GD80.html#down-bios

I have 8Gb ram and 700 watts of power. I have an AMD FX(tm)-8120 Eight-Core Processor.

I hope someone can help. Thank you.

Can't seem to find an error code guide for that motherboard. The closest I came across is this: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162861.0

Assuming error codes remain consistent across the range it suggests a GPU issue which prevents bootup (according to the mod in that thread). The user had to update their BIOS to get their GPU to work. As you suspect, updating your BIOS is worth a try as the issue is similar to the one in that thread.

Thank you for your response.

I am using Windows 10 x64. I have been looking into how to update the BIOS, but I am running into a little trouble there.

I have been downloading BIOS Version 13.6 (the top link) on:
https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/990FXA-GD80.html#down-bios

However; this download only contains one .exe file. When I copy the .exe file to a flash drive and go into my BIOS settings to use mflash, it sees the USB device but it tells me it does not contain any BIOS files.

I have noticed that the versions before 11.13 contain a text file, a .exe and another BD0 file. I dont know why they are different but I would assume I want the update from 2015-06-15..

What is the difference between BIOS and AMI BIOS?

I was able to update the BIOS on my own. After that the graphics card started up more or less without problem. I am currently downloading drivers. Thanks for your help!
