I remember someone telling me that if the voltage on your RAM is too high, it can eventually burn out the integrated memory controller on your CPU.

What is a "safe" memory voltage for an i7 7700K and Z270 motherboard?

Higher actually. Kaby Lake with Z270 especially an i7, is fine with 1.4v DDR4 4266. There were early Skylake boards that supported DDR3. You were 'supposed' to use DDR3L which is 1.35v but they did fine with standard 1.5v DDR3. The Kaby Lake memory controller is even better.

Also, I'm looking to get 16GB but I want to have four memory modules (trident z RGB) for aesthetic purposes.

Which means that I'll need to find a 4x4GB DDR4 288-pin dual channel kit.

The 2x8GB modules are "dual sided" or something to that effect. I don't know, but they're supposed to be special or something.

Is there some sort of inherent performance advantage between an 8GB DDR4 module vs a 4GB DDR4 module if they are both the exact same make, model, and clock speed?

They were fine all the way up to 1.65v. Have never ever ever heard of anyone damaged their Skylake / Kaby Lake CPU using overclocked DDR3.

With past architectures 4 sticks of RAM was somewhat stressful for the memory controller and there was a slight decrease in performance. With Skylake and Kaby the opposite is true. The memory controller benefits from the extra bandwidth of 4 DIMMs.

Go with the fastest speed you can afford. Kaby will like it. I'd start with 3200/14 or 3600/16.
