Hello,

My brother has an old system ( 8gb ddr2, q9550, 600w supply and a 9600gt) and I was thinking on giving him a new gpu but I don't wanna spend much because the system probably gonna bottleneck a fast gpu.
Will a rx 460 2gb be a good choice or can I aim for higher models?

thanks in advance.

The Core2Quad by today's standards is pretty week. On anything remotely CPU intesnive, even the 460 is going to be held back by your CPU.

At best I would try to find a 750 ti (even better if could find it used for decent price).
What your brother should look at upgrading to is a pentium g4560 + b250 motherboard + 8gb ram which runs about $200 USD. Now I dont know what this mystery 600w PSU is, if this is a low end grade PSU that was more concerned with printing a high sounding number on a sticker then actual quality then I would not use any GPU that requires dedicated power from the PSU (vs through motherboard port).

I had a similar CPU up to about last year, the core 2 quad at 2.66ghz, i had it paired with an AMD R270 and that worked pretty well. I think if you got the AMD 460 that would hold him fine until he can get an entire new platform. As you note, no point in throwing anything expensive after that platform.

thanks for all the quick replies.
About the psu yeah it's not even bronze so I will do a little research on used gpu and save some until I have money for a full new mobo.
