Hey Guys,

long story short, ive been researching a gaming build and have reached a point where im running into paralysis by analysis. with so much new technology, i could really use some help.... hopefully this can also benefit others who are also in a similar situation

Purpose I play pretty exclusively blizzard games, namely Heros of the storm (http://us.battle.net/heroes/en/). that being said, i know its not a very hardware intensive game, so i dont want to build a comp thats overkill for. At the same point in time, im aware games become more and more intensive, so while i dont want to go top tier, i do want to go fairly high end.

Goals

*Reliability is very important to me. Overclocking isnt typically my thing, i dont want to deal with water cooling and constantly working on the rig.

*I dont have a budget but i also dont want to spend an arm and a leg for a 4k top of the line gaming that i dont do. Im trying to find the happy medium of maybe 1 or 2 year old technology thats still powerful but also priced more fairly. (kind of where to opt for the cheaper freesync or more pricey gsync comes into play)

*I really would like to be able to play HEROS with a 1440p with 144mhz refresh on an IPS montior, id imagine this would need some sort of adaptive sync technology to maximize the experience

*i also want to have a mobo/cpu that will stay relevant to be able to upgrade in the future without having to build a brand new rig

Questions Im going to have a sample build with some questions in there, but in general, a few things off the bat

*whats the go to monitor right now? im having such difficulty finding 1440p IPS with 144hz and adaptive sync technology. i can find monitors that have 3/4 but rarely all 4. here are the ones i have been able to find
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-monitor-mg279q
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0173PEX34/?tag=pcpapi-20

*with SSD and hard drives, how is best to optimize that? do you install the OS on the SSD and games on the SSD but storage stuff on the HD? can you run everything on a 500gig ssd if that is all you need?

*the age old question. Nvdia vs AMD/ATI. with my desires of a powerful but not top top of the line gaming, i was hoping to be able to use freesync (only because the monitors are cheaper). is it justifiable going with nvidia?

*overclocking.... is there a safe way of doing it with air cooling? if so, with my goals, is it even worth it?

*is thermale paste still needed or do coolers have that build on the heatsync now?

Solution
G-Sync isn't necessary at all when you have a top of the line GPU, only good for when you're only getting 50-70fps for the most part.
Grab this.
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($336.88 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG - H5 Universal 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($46.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock - Z270 Pro4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($103.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Team - T-Force / Night Hawk 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($104.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung - 960 EVO 250GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive ($127.99 @ B&H)
Storage: Seagate - Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM...
What's your budget overall including monitor and any peripherals you might want?
I have a 1080 and run HoTS maxed at above 144FPS @1440p, do you pretty much only play HoTS?
Any other games worth mentioning?
OCing is very safe provided you get a decent air cooler like the Cryorig H7 or H5.

in a perfect world id like to get spend about ~1500 on the rig and it would hurt having to spend more than $ 700 on the monitor. id be able to sleep at night if i was able to get out at 2.2k to 2.4k.. would love to be all in at 1.8k but i have flexibility

i play overwatch here and there (my current rig can hadle that game better than hots). maybe cs go. but you just never really know the future and my current comp lasted me 9 years with only 2 upgrades in that time. i attribute it to going above what i needed to a degree but i also budgeted well

this will go a long way and good for testing out new games.
mobo comes with a killer gaming lan for ur online games ;)

I suppose I'll have to present a more budget friendly option too eh? :p
I've included better storage.
However, @OP, note that I find personally with a 1440p 144hz monitor and 1080 myself that in Overwatch unless I turn stuff down to a mix of medium and a few high settings, I can't hit above 144fps all the time, the extra power in the 1080 Ti is definitely something i'd invest in if I could have at the time.

thanks guys i very much appreciate the help in the matter.

So is adaptive sync really that debatable on whether its needed or not? ive heard people they say they cant play without it.

how is this so cheap? its ips, 155mhz and gysnc for 399???? this thing a lepper?

It isn't IPS, IPS isn't necessary at 24" since you're looking at it dead on anyway, bit of a waste of cash unless you're going 27", note that's a cheaper option, there's a better list above.
