My brother and I were experiencing very slow gameplay. The game's speed was set to the maximum (Game Speed = 6; Maximum). Our computers fully surpass the recommended requirements of the game. By the start of the match, The game runs smooth but when it reaches the mid game (5-15mins. of gameplay) it starts to lag. Both computers were connected to the physical ports of the router.

Pc1
cpu: q9400
ram: 4gb ddr3
gpu: gtx 560
os: windows 7 64b

Pc2: Dell inspiron 1018
os: windows xp 32b

Solution
Not going to lie, but I haven't LAN'd that game in almost 20 years. At that point I was running a Pentium 2 on a 100m netgear switch.

I would give ether one of these a try.
In the RA2 folder find the ra2(md).ini and add this line under video;

[Video]
VideoBackBuffer=no

Info:
game lag is literally all in the game code and in the way is handles rendering objects on the screen. The software wants to render instead of using DirectDraw but DD tries to do it anyway and bogs the game down with unnecessary actions. This modified DLL has a high success rate of reducing lag on most configurations. However, it's not 100% since a few machines here and there experience a black screen with audio and mouse input but no video. That means it does...
Are you playing against each other or together against the computer?

Back in the day when my friends and I would get together to play, the game would lag very badly or crash because there were to many units moving at the same time.

Im guessing this is what it happening, as the game goes on more and more things are getting built and slowing the game down. That game only ran as good as the weakest computer.

What if i replace the Pc2 with a i5 6th gen laptop so it can eliminate the lag? I have tested the Dell 1018 in the game's solo mode it runs smoothly. Does my internet or router can have affect the gameplay?

However, I am completely unsure of the success rate on Windows Vista but I know it's higher on Windows XP of both flavors.

Turn off hardware acceleration (http://www.pixelmetrics.com/Tips/VidBlank/...cceleration.php)
Info: Some RA2/YR players may experience dramatic in-game slowdowns during special effects, ie:
- Structures blowing up
- Prism tanks firing
- Using super weapons
This is due to outdated game code, which makes incorrect assumptions about modern video cards. Disabling hardware acceleration may negatively affect overall performance somewhat, but will also drastically reduce - if not completely eliminate - these slowdowns. Try running RA2/YR with and without this setting, and leave it at whichever works best for you.

I can't open the link, if this fails maybe we'll just cope with the lag! :D
