Hey guys,

So i recently bought a new SSD for my set up. I'm trying to switch my boot drive to the SSD. So far I've managed to install windows 8.1 to the SSD and i can run Windows (not without problems like unable to install VC redist), but when I try to boot up with the HDD disconnected I'm unable to get it past the BIOS. I'm not worried about having to wipe the HDD, I just want to make it so the SSD is the only bootable drive.

Thanks in advance.

Solution
did you install windows on the SSD with the HDD plugged in? Sounds like your master boot record is on the HDD and when you unplug it the computer has no idea the OS is on the SSD.

Since its a fresh install I would just pull the HDD out and then reinstall windows on the SSD.

There are ways to do a repair to move the boot record but a fresh install will insure you wont have any issues down the road.

When you installed Windows 8.1 was the SSD the only drive connected? If the HDD was connected along with the SSD and the HDD was on a SATA port that is considered higher in the default boot order then most likely the Windows boot manager is located on the HDD.

When installing Windows you should only connect only the SSD that you want Windows installed onto and disconnect any other HDDs and SSDs.

My boot list at them moment is the CD/DVD drive first and then the SSD. I did install windows on the SSD whilst the HDD was plugged in which I think is the mistake. I just tried to install windows with only the SSD plugged in but in won't get past BIOS. I don't think it seeing the SSD as a boot drive....

So I managed to get it all up and running. I ran a complete System Reset and installed Windows again this time only with the SSD connected.

Thanks for the help
