I have Ubuntu 17.04 installed on external hard drive and I'm trying to boot from it on a Surface Pro 3 running windows. I've changed the boot order multiple times in the UEFI but still no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.

Solution

Absolutely! Your Surface Book almost certainly contains different hardware - in particular the disk controller - to your desktop, which would explain your problem. It may even be that your desktop boots using BIOS rather than the UEFI that the Surface Book uses.

As you can boot from live media I'm guessing that you have turned secure boot off.
You should try something simpler and proven to work, like creating Linux installation USB, and booting off there. Once you master this, you should install your Linux on that HDD. This will ensure that all required boot records are OK.

Not all computers are created equal, and booting off external HDD is a tricky business, and Surface is not a run-of-the-mill laptop.

I have no problems booting from live media on my Surface. But I used my desktop to install linux on my HDD. Are you suggesting that I reinstall Linux using my Surface on to my external?
