For AV program, on my old AMD build, i used Nod32 and Spybot. On my Skylake build, i tried Malwarebytes and didn't find any use for it. So, at this point, i don't have any dedicated AV programs in use. But what i have, are several add-ons for my Firefox that do a far better job and doesn't hog the PC's resources (e.g AdBlock Plus, NoScript, HTTPS Everywhere etc).

For the best security there is, don't connect your laptop to the internet. :D

Jokes aside, here's further reading with reviews for each listed AV program,

If you have an original windows...you don't need any antivirus. As it has an inbuilt antivirus "Windows defender"
Apart from that every other anti virus will slow your system down

If the built-in Windows Defender would do excellent job then there wouldn't be any other AV programs around. But since it's not the case (Win Defender is one of the worst), there's plenty of market for AV programs.
Also, not all AV programs will slow down the system.

Here's 2 days old article that covers the latest flaw in Win Defender,
