Need to replace graphic card

Hey,

I need a new graphics card. I know very little about everything relating to hardware, so I need help (so I don't buy something which isn't compatible etc). I don't even know by heart which parts I already have, so I looked them up.

When I open my computer, on the board it reads

AsRock
N68C-S UCC

and beside that

DDR2 1066
DDR3 1600
Dual Channel

And on System Information, Windows tells me that my current graphics card is a AMD Radeon HD7700 Series. (Also processor info, in case it matters, is AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 945 Processor 3.00 GHz.) Plus, I use a VGA to HDMI (?) adapter because connecting my monitor directly with the HDMI didn't work for some reason.

Now, what I want is basically just a replacement that has a high chance of working immediately and without problems. If a much stronger one is just marginally more expensive I wouldn't object to it, but generally it doesn't have to be more powerful than the old one. (I considered just buying the exact same card again, but I figured it's not smart to make any decision given how little I know, plus it did fail after all).

So, can you tell me which is the best purchase given all the above? I hope I included all relevant info.

Yeah that should do the job fine.

Unless you plan to give you pc a major upgrade (new motherboard, CPU, RAM etc), thats a good option. If you were planning on upgrading the rest then I would have suggested something higher end, but as it is, thats a good enough card for your system.

What monitor do you have? does the monitor have HDMI (or DVI or DisplayPort) connection on it?

Most of the new graphics cards no longer give out a analogue VGA signal, so would be good information to have before recommending a graphics card for you.

I just transcribed what it said on the backf of my monitor:

Fujitsu
LCD Display
Product Name E19-9 EIO
Model E19-5
Power Rating 100/240V - 50/60 Hz 1.5A

It has a HDMI and a VGA connection. Like I said, though, using the HDMI cable to connect with the current graphics card never worked (the screen just stayed dark) and I never figured out why, or whether it's the monitor or the graphic card's fault, so right now I use the VGA cable and the VGA/HDMI adapter.

Might be worth checking which it is at fault first. Can you try plugging something else into the hdmi port on the monitor (remember you may need to change the source on the monitor using the buttons), try something like a dvd player or another computer etc.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is another device in my house which uses HDMI ( I remember that I did want to test exactly this way back, but couldn't so I just went with the current solution.) However, based on your comment about the buttons, I think it might be possible that it actually works and I just didn't know that I had to configure it manually. I'll just see if I can get it to work now with the current monitor.

Thanks a lot!

Actually... it... might have worked without me even doing anything this time. Idk why? *embarassed blush* Eh, anyway it's working now.

This one? (The site is German because that'll make shipping easier.) I get a bunch of results just looking for "RX 460".

Ugh.

So the graphic card is working (the fan doesn't spin which worries me but I googled it and apparently it only starts spinning at a certain temperature, so that should be fine). Unfortunately, the problem I previously concluded (and was told) is very likely graphic related, and which I was attempting to fix, is partially still there.

So the symptoms were this:

1. every other hour or so, everything freezes, my screen turns dark, then it goes back to normal again and I receive a popup message telling me display drivers have failed but recovered. Assuming that this one had to be graphic related (and until it happens again...), I hope this still validates the purchase.

2. My computer sometimes won't boot, it's stuck at the very first screen, where it presents the graphic card, shows a pretty image, and presents options to go to bios and stuff instead of booting normally (it either shows this screen for just a few seconds (when it works normally) or is stuck there forever). When this happens I just restart until it works. Experimentally, it seems that it only has a chance of working when I wait a few seconds (and put it off power), when I just hit the reset button, it's frozen every time.

3. Sometimes it appears to work but is then frozen forever at the windows welcome screen instead

#2 and #3 just happened after I installed the new drivers, so clearly the issue isn't fixed.

Uhm, it has to be the motherboard now, right? :x
