Are the Ryzen 1800x or 1700x Compatible with my Motherboard?

Hi everyone,

I currently have an i5 4460. I would like to upgrade to rather a 1700x or 1800x. I don't think either of the processors will be compatible with my motherboard. I have a MSI Z97 Gaming 5. Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated. Also recommendations would be great.

Not compatible , your setup is Intel those are AMD CPU's.

Intel and AMD CPUs haven't had interchangeable motherboards in nearly 20 years. Completely different sockets and CPU-to-chipset interconnects.

Yeah that's what I thought. Any recommendations on a motherboard similar to one I have, preferably MSI?

You will need a new board and DDR4 memory for the new AM4 platform.

Ryzen only supports DDR4.

You will basically need a new computer. CPU, Motherboard (Socket AM4) and RAM (DDR4).

an i7 4790k is fairly cheap used. Even that 4770K can be found under $200
