Old PSU for new build?

So today I went out and got the parts for a new pc.

I got an MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon and a Ryzen 1600x.

After assembling everything I got no lights and no reaction to power switch (Even when using a screwdriver to jump it). So I assumed the motherboard was dead.

I returned it and got another, and this one does the same thing. Two power supplies that I can jump with a paperclip and that will power my old mobo, but nothing out of the new one.

One nice been out of this game since 2009, so has something changed that I'm not aware of?

The two power supplies are a Silverstone 1200w sst-st1200 and a PC Power and Cooling T12W 1200 watt PSU.

Both the 24 pin and 8 pin power connectors were firmly seated in their appropriate sockets and I tested both new boards fully loaded and empty of everything but a processor.

What am I missing here? Can someone help am old pro that's been out of the game a while?

By empty do you mean no RAM? Try one stick of RAM with only the motherboard and CPU. If nothing try your other stick of RAM. If you stll get nothing both sticks are probable good. IE something else is the cause. Try setting the motherboard on the motherboard box with everything hooked up. This tests if your motherboard is grounding on the case. Make sure you flipped the backswitch on the PSU.

you could take a picture of what you are trying to do there, it sounds like you connected the psu and nothing else, there could be the possibility you wired wrong the power button

more details on your case, parts used and the picture of the case could be helpful
