Hey Guys,

Im doing a new gaming build, i play mostly heros of the storm, which isnt the most hardware intensive game. So, im not trying to spend a million dollars but also want a powerful enough build to where i dont have to upgrade in a year or two. trying to find that happy medium, fortunately, I can afford to spring if i need to.

All that being said, smooth high res gaming is my interest. ive done a ton of research and i understand ill need to take advantage of the adaptive sync technology. ive also concluded that IPS doesnt seem to have the seek time im looking for, so im going to opt for a TN panel.

however, whether to go with gsync or free sync is still up in the air, so obviously, im deciding between nvidia and amd. Also, the power to cost ratio of the graphics card is something im trying to figure out. of course, then there is, which brand of said graphics card..... ever easy

here is what i was thinking, based on the happy medium approach of powerful yet cost effective (about $900 out the door):

Monitor: Dell - S2417DG 23.8" 2560x1440 165Hz Monitor

Graphics Card Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB WINDFORCE OC 8G Video Card

does anyone have insight on the situation? obviously, if there is a synergistic monitor and graphics card combo that people use, i would be interest to know what that is.

very much appreciate guys, i hope this will not only be beneficial for me but also for those who find themselves in the same situation.

WOW when I read that you won't be spending a million dollars I thought you would be getting some kind of mid range build, and I was thinking about recommending an RX 570 or 580, until the GTX 1080 came into my sight.
That GSync monitor is crazy. I've never ever thought about even trying to get a Gsync monitor ever in my life, as I'm always the Mid range kinda guy.

Many people prefer Nvidia because of their software, and I do too. My reasoning is that I'm that kind of guy who wants to overclock EVERYTHING in my build. So I would look towards overclocking my monitor.

Nvidia pascal cards overclock like champs. and they also come with the nvidia control panel, which lets me overclock my monitor very easily. It just takes like 3 minutes, and BAM! 77Hz from a 60Hz panel.

So if you feel like overclocking that already high panel (I think you might be able to reach 180Hz if you use the right cable)

Just my thoughts on this. : D

thanks man. im not a guru, ive overclocked cpus, no almost next to nothing about overclocking a monitor tbh. but sounds like +1 for nvidia

thanks man, good to hear. how about the specific brand of the 1080? not TI version still going to be powerful enough?

to take advantage of that monitor you are going to need a gtx 1080 ti

and the setup to keep up with it

if it was a regular 1440p 60hz monitor then a 1080 would be fine

you are looking at reducing settings quite a lot to get the fps needed to justify that refresh rate with a 1080

Thanks guys, appreciate both of you input, the last thing i want is buyers remorse and regret trying to save a few bucks. Sounds as if the TI is justifiable in spending more.

how does this card sound?
