I see a lot of information coming out about new 5k and even 8k monitors like the UP3218K coming out sometime this year. I am shopping for a new monitor and was wondering if it would be better financially to go ahead and buy a 4k monitor (the one's I am looking at now range from $550-$800) for gaming now, or to settle for something less expensive for the next year or so hoping that the 4ks go down in price once the new one's are more available?

Anyone have any advice on what the smarter thing would be financially?

Also, if you have any recommendations on monitors in general I'd love to hear it. There's so much variance in opinion on what people prefer (curved, ultra-wide, etc). If there's something you have found that's really great let me know!!

Thank you!

Well, if it's for gaming you need to consider what games you plan on playing at 4k and what FPS and settings you're OK with. If you want to be able to play any games at decent FPS, you'll need at least a 1080 Ti, which run $700 and up in the US. Even then there are already a few games the 1080 Ti will not play at 60 FPS or more at 4k.

So if you do want to play all games and get good frame rates as well, it would also behoove you to pick a display that scales well to 1440p. Some don't look so good at anything below the native resolution.

Lastly, many of the more avid gamers actually prefer 1440p monitors with high refresh rate, like the Acer Predator with 144Hz refresh. However that also takes a fairly hefty graphics card if you want...

The reason hardcore gamers prefer the 1440p 144Hz displays is you are much more likely to experience smooth gameplay on them.

Displays are a very personal preference thing, including what panel type you choose (TN, VA, IPS, etc).
