Hello guys

i saw nvidia regvealed gv100 and that usually means new xx80 arriving soon right?
im considering an upgrade from gtx 970 to 1080 for vr thou
(no bottleneck in the rest: i7-6700k and 16gb ram) (also cant buy the 1080 ti since than i wouldnt have enough money for the vr headset :/ )

but is it still a good idea with volta being so close?

my issue is only that i could play a lot in the summer but otherwise just extremely rarely (university is hard lol xP and i cant play in school time im not that clever i tried x( )

thats why i saved up till now but you see if i wait for volta that would most likely take beyond this summer x(

thoes might release in setp okt or dec and would be a pointless purchase for me (as they always get cheaper by summer)

so bottom line do you think the 1080 is still worth a buy or volta is so hyped its worth to see how it is before buying anything?

thank you guys x)

With the suggestion of we won't see a consumer Volta based GPU for a good while yet, here is my advice. If you are unhappy with the performance of your current GPU, go ahead and pull the trigger on the 1080 or 1080Ti. If you think you can wait, go ahead and wait. I say this, especially when the release is just around the corner on a GPU, but it still applies when a new GPU is months away. Now, if you really need a new GPU soon, Volta is just too far out to really wait on it.

gp104 = GTX1080
gp102 = 1080Ti
gp100 = Tesla

gv100 will likely end up as a Quadro/Tesla only, it seems they put a lot of design work into deep learning and not so much gaming. (Though I am sure it would do fine at gaming)

Given the size of the silicon, a brand new process, it will not be cheap. So a Geforce version is unlikely, possibly a Titan 'V', but that isn't what happened with Pascal, they used GP102.

When the rumors of vp104 or vp102 start happening, then you might consider waiting.

Still a 1080 is a heck of an upgrade over a 970, more than double the performance. If you really wanted to see an improvement, there is the 1080Ti.

The Volta Geforce isn't coming until Q4 this year or Q2 next year. You have 8-10 months until the new cards come out. Might as well buy something now.

Only the Telsa product line was announced. if NVIDIA continunes its past trends, it will be another 6 months before they announce the consumer ones and than another year until the actual full Titan X Volta comes out.

You forget Eximo that the new Titan Xp (2017 model) is a full gp100 like the counterpart Tesla. The 1080 TI is the cut down version which is used in the Titan X (2016 model, none Xp)

gp104 = GTX1080
gp102 = 1080Ti / Titan X (2016)
gp100 = Tesla / Tian Xp (2017)

thank you for your answers

Eximo than you suggest i should wait? its ok the 970 is far from its glory days but can still hold its own i hope thats true for vr too xD

well if i buy the 1080 ti than im "stuck" with a 1080p60hz monitor for my entire gaming period xP (cant buy that and a vr set in the same time) and as i heared everywhere 1080 ti for 1080p60hz is overkill waste of money :/ (but pls correct me if im wrong)

thank you for your help too
so you think 1080 would serve well for now?
what do you think about the rumors of the massive performance improvements like the volta xx50 could beat out 2 titan xps?

Well that does happen. I still have my pair of GTX980 laying around, a hard sell with the GTX1060 available. But this time they aren't going from 28nm to 14nm, only a minor shrink to 12nm, plus all the optimizations they have come up with. All comes down to how large they make the consumer chip.

I did not forget, the Titan Xp is not a GP100. It is just the fully enabled GP102. The Titan X (Pascal) was missing a few SM units. Which is actually the bigger chip then the GP100. The Titan X (Pascal) and the GP100 chip actually had the same core count, just that GP100 was hooked up HBM2 rather than GDDR5X.

wait a sec now i got so much suggestions of buying the 1080 ti o_O
i can do that but that means i would be using it on a 1080p60hz screen while i could buy a vr set (or fitting monitor) next to the 1080

is simply upgrading the card to 1080 ti better? i thought card without screen for it is... i forgot the word whatever xD

A 1080 Ti is slight overkill for 1920x1080 but you will be able to play every single game max settings with 150-200 FPS for the next few years.

Also my fault Exmio, the Titan Xp (2017) is a GP102, but it has the same amount of CUDA cores as a GP100, so really they just cut out the FP64 part and called it good. For the gamer the Titan Xp is a GP100 since nothing they care about is disabled. Only stuff that makes it a Tesla is removed.

With a focus on VR, go ahead and stick with the regular 1080, it's relatively affordable and leaves you some room for VR (at least the way I understand what you're saying.)

(This is an approximation: GTX-970 = GTX-1060 6GB., GTX-1070 = GTX980.)

The 1080Ti is overkill for 1080p 60Hz, but as a VR performer.... well... it's hard to beat at the moment unless you jump to the Titan Xp.... but if you managed to get the Titan within your budget, it certainly sounds like the VR headset is out of the question. If budget is a concern, stick with the 1080 over the 1080Ti as if you look hard enough, a handful of 1080s are dropping below $500 USD, at least as a sale price.

GTX1060 3GB and 6GB outperform the GTX970. GTX 1060 6GB with a little overclocking is equal to a stock GTX980 and has more memory, and Pascal has a lot more headroom than Maxwell.

A GTX1080 is twice the GPU of a GTX1060, with more and faster memory.

A GTX1080Ti 11GB is another 35% or so on top of the 1080, again, with more and faster memory.

Should also be some new GTX1080 cropping up with the faster memory.

GTX1080 is more than competent for 2560x1440 for a good while yet, which is roughly the resolution and FPS you need for VR. Even the most punishing titles still get around 90FPS on my machine.

Annoyingly I've gotten myself stuck on the x80 release cycle, so I am always looking at the Ti models, but unless something drastic happens I'll ride this card for a good long while. Probably not going to touch SLI again either.

I was thinking more in line with stock speeds, as seen with the FE models... then again... perhaps I was thinking of the FE models in general where they tended to throttle back.

i was looking at the gw phonix modell its on sale here and now far the cheapest 1080 of all x) (cheaper than some 1070 modells) (gw is not exactly my fav thou xP its asus but that costs 4/3 times more x( )

damn i do love the 1080 ti but im upgrading the card to be able to play in vr if the card is so expensive that i cant buy vr that defeats the whole purpose xD (but belive me i do also admire its performance ;) )

Well, not quite true again. The uncut GP102 of the Xp (3840:240:96) has more SM units then a GP100 (), that is why it is desirable. The older Titan X (Pascal) or XP if you prefer, has the same core count as the GP100.

Really have to blame Nvidia for not naming their cards in a reasonable manner.

Titan
Titan X (Maxwell)
Titan X (Pascal)
Titan Xp

To split hairs:

GTX Titan
GTX Titan X (Maxwell)
Titan X (Pascal)
Titan Xp

nVidia dropped the GTX with Pascal, trying to aim the card at a different market segment.
