We're having financial problems atm that's why I have to buy parts 1 by 1, I just bought the CPU, and GPU today.

I bought the PSU and Cooler 4-6 weeks ago

I decided to get rid of the plastic that is covering the packaging so I can check.

Is this a bad move on my part?

What should I avoid on doing while the parts are just sitting in my room waiting? This is my first time pc-building.

Solution
well the first think is to make sure ur parts r 100% compatible. make sure ur mobo can fit in case, u have enough clearance for cooler, PSU can handle ur config n such. next is to get parts in working order. case, mobo, cpu/cooler, ram monitor, HDD, GPU.
if u r going for a good CPU, u can fo for the GPU at the last.

Reputable
50-50 could have been said, if you do it for like 1 year to complete the whole parts, then it wouldnt be a good idea, the parts will most likely be outdated, but if you do that for like only some couple of months then it could still have been said fairly good idea

Honorable
okay 1st and more important point : returns

buying parts one by one over a longer period it's harder to return an item because its not compatible (not talking about faulty parts). take note of any returns policy.

following the advice by Lucky_SLS would also be a good idea .
