Hi,
We have a fairly slow connection, when nobody else is using bandwidth speed test come back about 70 ping 5 down and 0.3 up.

If it's just me gaming is fine however soon as someone starts streaming youtube or similar it dies and ping will go from 200-999 making gaming impossible!

I've been looking at these QOS routers, does anyone have one? do they actually work?

If someone was streaming youtube and I was gaming would my ping remain about 70?

Thanks for your help!
Jake

I use a 8 port smart switch and I live out in the middle of nowhere so the fastest internet speed I can get is a 10mbps down and 0.75upload. With my switch, I limit all the other users in the house to around 0.30mbps up and 5mbps down which seems to keep my ping and everything in check, although my computer has the full bandwidth so if I were to download something it will make everyone else slow down.

QoS enabled didn't do a thing for me, manually limiting the other user's bandwidth kept my computer in check latency wise.

Thanks for your reply, I thought that may be the case! Didn't want to dish out £100 on a decent QOS router if it isn't actually going to help!

QoS is not really something magic. It just electronically enforces a policy. Pretty much when you have such a small internet connection and you want to play games the only way to get that to work is to prevent anyone else from using it. You barely have enough upload speed for most games, some of the newer ones need even more. Even simple web surfing could disrupt a game when you have such small upload speeds.

It tends to be easier in conditions like this where you are going to have to completly block access to just ask the other person not use the internet rather than try to come up with a fancy router configuration.

....as a side node check dd-wrt compatibility list you might get lucky and your current router will run it

Perks of living 2 miles from your exchange! Thanks for your input, I will take a look at dd-wrt but I might just have to accept th truth and deal with it!
