Hi guys,

I have a Windows 10 partition on a 2.0TB old hard drive, I want to buy a 1.0tb ssd. If I split the 2.0TB drive in half, and clone the 1.0tb operating system partition to the 1.0tb ssd. Is it possible to do it? If so, what is the actual size that windows 10 recognize 1.0tb partition? I want to buy a 2.0tb ssd, but it is pricey right now.

Thanks,

Just make sure you have all the partitions included in that 760GB used if you go MR way, it will adjust it's size to available space on new disk. Same should happen with cloning but I like using MR because it gives me 1 file backup of whole system I could use at any time if necessary, I use it all the time for regular system backup anyway. It's Rescue disk/USB has facility to repair any BOOT problems too. It's worth having that program in any case and it's free. I keep a rescue disk on a 4GB micro SD card as it takes next to no space at all.

How much total used space is consumed on your current C drive?
If that is smaller than the actual size of the new SSD, cloning is an option. Don't worry about partition sizes...just the actual consumed space.

If the size things fit, these steps here:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the original boot partitions, here:

-----------------------------

For a success

The main drive(OS) has 760GB used space and 1.07TB free space. Do I use the Macrium Reflect to clone it without breaking down the partition to a 1TB SSD?

Thank you
