Do I need a driver to connect an ethernet cable?

To get this straight:

- I'm on a laptop
- Freshly installed windows - needing drivers
- I've downloaded the Wi-Fi adapter driver that allows me to connect to nearby signals
- I also have an ethernet cable connected to the laptop for a more stable connection but the laptop still connects to the Wi-Fi (recognizable by the icon in the notification side of the taskbar - left side of the date and time)

I also downloaded what I thought it was the specific driver: "Qualcomm Atheros AR8172/8176/8178 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30)" but it wasn't.

Now I am asking, what are the steps I have to follow to detect the cable or what driver do I have to download in order to do so? Should something appear in Device Manager as I connect the ethernet cable to my computer?
