So I have an old server (Dell PowerEdge CS24-NV7), with :

> 2 x AMD Opteron Quad Core 2.1 Ghz (2373)
> 16GB RAM - PC2-5300P ECC
> 4 x 3.5" SATA Hard Drives Bays
> 600W PSU
> Dual Marvell® 88E1116 PHY Gigabit NICs

Can I run OBS on this and use it as a dedicated live streaming system, so I can run a dual streaming system.

My gaming PC would be capturing the gameplay, then sending it to the server through a crossover Ethernet cable. The server would do the encoding (x264) and send it to twitch/YouTube.

I know this is pretty unusual as servers aren't created for this type of task but it's just laying around collecting dust.

if you can stand the noise, the power consumption and the space it takes, yes

i wouldn't, the noise is enough to make me want to recycle and try one of those videos to recover gold from it :D

the power consumption made by those opterons, another no

So using a capture card is probably the cheapest option right, i could us NVENC on my PC but the quality isn't good enough and there is lots of artifacting. A capture card should take the staring off my PC right?

Or what about a really cheap dual xeon 5000 series build with 8 cores, should be fine with encoding as a dedicated streaming pc. A pair of L5420's for around £20 in the uk from ebay, pair it with a LGA771 board and some ram and i should be fine.
