Gigabyte GTX 1080 system hard crashing

I have a Gigabyte GTX 1080 and my system will hard crash while playing games. Certain games crash the system more (Mass Effect Andromeda). The system will crash at the same point every time until the video settings are turned down considerably. Usually crashes when trying to load a cut scene but will also crash the whole system if certain criteria are met during gameplay. Temperature doesn't appear to be the issue and frame rate isn't where it should be (only at 2k). I'm afraid the issues is with one of the processors on the card.

Solution
Are you using the Gigabyte Aorus Graphics Engine? If so, uninstall it and get MSI Afterburner. The software is buggy, and supposedly only works when in silent mode; gaming, oc, and some custom settings will cause crashes. I'm currently plagued with this issue myself on my Gigabyte 1080ti. Read quite a few reviews on newegg about it and recently switched to Afterburner. Gonna give it a couple of days - if no issues, then I'll chalk it up to the software instead of a bad card.

I use afterburner and Kombuster 3. No problems with stress testing. I guess I don't understand why stress testing seems to be fine but it hard resets when trying to load a cut scene.... is dirty power the issue?

Okay, I started messing with Kombuster running various test and I've been able to recreate the crashes by running the Tessellation burner. The other tests seem to perform fine and the only difference I can tell is that my motherboard tries to help process the tessellation. Could the problem be the onboard chipset?

I had a similar issue with my 1070, couldn't find anything that had fixed it for all the other people with the same issue. Then I saw someone mention they fixed it by downclocking to a lower voltage, so this made me think that maybe it was something to do with the power usage of the device.

In the end after trying a lot of things, I fixed the issue for myself by changing the Power Management Mode to "Prefer maximum performance" in Nvidia control panel.

    1) Navigate to Control Panel
    2) Launch Nvidia Control Panel
    3) Select Manage 3D Settings within the 3D Settings menu on the left hand pane.
    4) Find "Power management mode" within the Global Setting list.
    5) Change "Power Management Mode" to "Prefer Maximum performance".

After I made this change I never had a single random reboot again ever.
I've just noticed now too that mine is actually set to Optimal Power, so I'm assuming at some stage an update to my cards changed the setting back, so I guess my issue must have somehow fixed itself up over time or with updates, but it's something to try I guess :^)

Good luck
