My friend wants to upgrade his i5 to and i7, they are the same socket, the mobo can support the i7 and the system can support it power wise etc.

I believe it should be as simple as plug and play, bench it properly and its good to go but whilst googling I get mixed results on if you will have to re install windows 10 and certain apps might not work etc.

He wants to upgrade an i5 4670k to an i7 4790k on a gigabyte Z97P-D3

Solution
For a fresh install you don't need the key or CD. Just simply go into Control Panel > System and Security > Security and Maintenance > Recovery and click fresh install (delete all files)

While upgrading a PC most would recommend a fresh windows install just in case anything goes wrong. That's what I would say. If he wants to take the chance then yes, it should still be fine to just plug and play.

The only thing is he got this pc built for him by a company 4 years ago. I will find out but i doubt he has the windows cd or pen drive they used to install his windows for him.

How could we do a fresh install bar buying windows 10 again of we do not have them?
