hello guys,

i would like to upgrade my PC a little since i have some money to spare. here are my current specs:
-AMD FX 4170 quad core 4.2 Ghz
-GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 motherboard
-8GB ram
-GIGABYTE GEFORCE GTX 960 GPU
-WIN7

now, i have about 500 euros to spare on parts. since the CPU is quite old i would like to focus on a new one without having to buy a new motherboard as well..if that is possible.

if i can get a newer CPU with still some spare money it would be nice to get a bigger tower as well.i bought my PC as a pre-build gaming PC and have upgraded the GPU last year.the tower itself is quite small and a cheap build i think.its very loud when playing demanding games (arma 3) and it doesnt have decent airflow as it is.

iam not bothered just yet to buy a new GPU since the 960 does a good job for my gaming needs at the moment.

any advice is greatly appreciated.
thanks for your time,
Adam

after some quick looking around i found the following that cought my eyes.
-AMD FX 8350 Black Edition CPU or
-AMD Ryzen 5 1500X Desktop CPU-AM4(Quad Core,3.5GHz -3.7GHz Turbo,65W)

and this tower:
-Phanteks Enthoo Pro - full tower - SSI EEB

i found these and it says £9.95 delivery to ireland but i don't know if that is per item . might be worth taking a look i know it is less ram.. but i am trying to stay within budget so we can work out any shipping and or import fees .

You'll have to buy a new motherboard to accommodate Ryzen CPUs.

Your GPU is still decent even for today's standard. So, a platform overhaul seems like the most logical route.

$500 would get you an i5 or an R5. I'd recommend go for R5. Aside from nearly identical IPC and more cores to work with, going R5 would grant you the possibility to OC your CPU regardless whichever CPU picked.

At this point, it's pointless to go with higher tier on FX's. Not only it's a dead platform but also the power it requires to operate. While it's true it's the shortest and cheapest route for your case, but even a $60 G4560 is faster than FX8370 in gaming. Like, up to 20% faster. And at a significantly lower TDP at it.

I suggest go something like this:

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor ($218.49 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI - B350M GAMING PRO Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ($78.88 @ OutletPC)
Memory: Kingston - HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($110.53 @ Amazon)
Case: Phanteks - Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower Case ($80.00 @ Newegg)
Total: $487.90

don't buy 2133mhz ram for use with ryzen cpus . ryzen cpus work much better with faster ram such as 3000/3200mhz .

so after comparing the different parts for here in ireland...europe turns out to be much more expensive then the US. mobo,CPU and case, including delivery from germany, alone cost 470 euros.

i had thought i can skip the ram but of course a DDR4 mobo doesnt take my old DDR3 ram chips.
guess the upgrade has to wait :(

i dont per se need a case or the one i posted. although for my PC's health i guess i should get at least a bigger one but perhaps not as fancy.
as for your other question..iam not sure amazon delivers for free to ireland.

amazon does deliver free on orders over a certain amount ..around about £ 26 i think.. (i'm in wales so it shows me in £ and not euro)

the best thing to buy for the health of your pc is a good power supply unit and that doesn't mean high wattage .(quality and wattage are two different things :p)

edit: Deliveries to the Republic of Ireland. For customers in the Republic of Ireland, orders including £25 or more (including local VAT) of eligible items, dispatched by Amazon, from any product category qualify for FREE Delivery.

so look for the items that are dispatched by amazon and not by other sellers and see if you can get some good deals .

of course the one CPU that i want and would be shipped for free isnt sold to ireland.

is there a big difference between thr ryzen 5 1600 and the 1500? i could get that instead...sorry this turned into a sort of chat by the way :p

the 1600 is a 6 core /12 thread cpu and the 1500x is a 4 core / 8 thread so quite a big difference when you consider they are so closely priced .

if you're interested in streaming gaming session or video editing then the 1600 would make a lot of sense and it does beat the i5 7600k in some games . i always look at things this way : if it was me and i wanted the better cpu and i opted for the 2nd choice i'd always wonder ! what would this game be like if.. or how much better would my pc be if i had.." and that would do my brain great harm

don't worry about the chat ! you haven't considered an intel based system then ?

i'm trying to find you the best i can and still leave something left for a case . might take me a little while . most of the decent ones are £50-£70

this is £50 . there is an opened-box item of the same power supply for £7 less but i haven't linked that one because that is your choice to make .. it's underneath the price as a clearance item if you wish to take a look.

edit: you can always make a new thread and ask about a new psu if you wish . i know this one is very good quality but maybe someone else can spot a bargain i have missed .
