Remove RAID on Award Bios

I've got an old system that was configured with two HDDs in a raid configuration. I would like to convert it back to two HDDs without raid. In the Award Bios (1.1) integrated peripherals > IDE devices configuration > SATA controller mode, there are options for raid (which is set) and IDE. Can I just set this back to IDE without affecting/corrupting the original disks? I ask because I read some time ago that you can't just do this in some cases. I suspect this may be for striping setups, but OTOH I don't know for sure that this bios uses raid 1.

Uh, If I were you, I'd open up the computer and see if you are getting roughly the combined size of the hard drives (RAID 0) or just the size of one (RAID 1). Either way, it's possible for corruption to occur, but much less likely if you were using RAID 1.

Personally, I would copy everything off both drives (or the array, however you think of it) to a third party media just so there are no questions and you can full format both individual drives.

I wish I could offer a better answer, but old media and such I just don't trust to work "right" on their face, especially for a recommendation.

Yeah better safe than sorry. FWIW, I backed up the array, and switched the setting to IDE, and it hosed the drives. So you were right. It's is odd because they were in fact raid1.
