I downloaded XP mode, didn't run anything in the folder or set anything up. Restarted my PC and went into BIOS to check if virtualization was on following these instructions (link) I did the first 3 steps and restarted again went into BIOS again to continue but couldn't find anything labeled virtualization so I exited without saving. It automatically gave me an XP loading screen and then a BSOD. Did a hard shutdown. restarted with "last known good config" to XP loading to BSOD. Restarted tried safe mode with networking and it told me to choose which windows to run and the only option is now XP so I tried it and it loaded successfully in safe mode. Tried a few things, basically if I don't start in safe mode I get a BSOD and XP is the only operating system to chose now. I looked under start-up and recovery too and XP is the only one listed. I'm not sure what to do now. Thank you for any assistance.

That may be what it sounds like (I agree) but that is certainly not what I did. I didn't even install XP mode, nevermind completely install another OS. I only downloaded it, did not install anything at all. My PC was custom built though and maybe he installed XP and 7 so that is why it is already there but where did 7 go? I also don't have the OS disk to boot from.

I restored optimized defaults and save and exit. I have multiple drives, main is a SSD where windows 7 and xp mode were installed, not sure where XP OS was installed but assuming here as well. I have 3 other HDD too.

Here is a screenshot of the BSOD

disconnect all your drives but the SSD and see what it boots to

Do I disconnect just the power wires or the others wires too? The power wires are setup in line (jump maybe) and the SSD is the last connector in the line, does that make a difference?

you don't need to disconnect the power cables just the data(SATA) cables

Nailed it! As soon as I went into boot seq I saw they were all out of order. Put them in the right order and I'm back to Win 7 and no BSOD (for now, I get them from time to time anyways). Thank you! I wonder what else that "restore optimized defaults" changed though? I spent a lot of time recently changing a lot of settings (in windows not BIOS) with a tech that fixed a bunch of problems for me. Fingers crossed.
