So I recently moved out of the city limits and long story short, my at&t dsl is terrible (5 down, 1 up) it's ok for gaming but the second that anyone loads a web page on a phone or another computer it causes lag and packet loss.

I 've never gamed off of a tethered connection from a phone, is it reliable?

Does anyone have any other ideas on how to get better internet?

Any and all information is helpful!

Also about how much data would it take to play games like wow for say 20 hours a week?

You really can't do much with DSL, other than to make sure you're getting the absolute fastest DSL uplink from the ISP aka. phone company. I have CenturyLink and have their highest non-fiber optic/1 gig package and still only get around maybe 12 down and 4 up. It's barely enough for gaming on consoles when others are using like YouTube or web browsing simultaneously. Other than that, I really like it.

Here's the other part, get a good router with 2.4/5 GHz bands and gigabit Ethernet. They help with minimizing issues caused by wireless. Always plug into your router/modem if you can and avoid WiFi because it will give you the fastest connection consistently.

For tethering a broadband connection... don't unless it's an emergency as it will absolutely gobble your data and it won't be much faster than your DSL.

Thx for your quick answers. I don't like wifi so I am routed via Ethernet.

I have reset the modem etc and worked with my isp on configuring the modem. Originally I was only getting 3 down of the 6 I was paying for.

I also have a netgear dualvand n600 modem/router.

The only option I have found that is considerable is at&t's wireless 4g LTE internet but I am very worried that because it is wireless, I'll have ping issues but I have read where people use this and have very low ping so maybe I'll get lucky. I doubt I can improve my dsl internet, I'm just Looking at possible routes I can take. Thx for your feedback!
