My computer recently died and after weeks of troubleshooting I have come to the conclusion that it is dead. Im looking to buy an i7 7700k and I am quite lost on which motherboard I actually need. I was hoping to wait out till coffee lake or cannon lake, but Im not sure I can wait that long for potentially very little gain from waiting.

I plan on doing some OCing, I do not need wireless, and I will be putting a single 980ti GPU no SLI. I also plan on buying DDR 4 either 4 4gb sticks or 2 8gb sticks in the 3000s speed. I also have 2 SSDs and 1 HDD that I want to connect. I do not have too much brand preference I just want to get the best bang for my buck for my needs and something that will not break. Hopefully someone can give me some help choosing a good board and thank you for taking the time to read this.

I bought the ryzen 1700 becasue I got it at a steal.

For most people it would be the straight 1600 mate, its at just the right pricepoint & for a 6 core / 12 thread chip is outstanding value.

I fully understand your concern for a gaming rig but the thing is unless youre running a 144hz screen & insist...

It is not sold anymore sadly it was back when logitech was making great speakers it is the logitech z5500. Also for the prime I know in the past I bought Asus boards and apparently I did not buy the good boards that came with the OCing software so it was quite difficult to OC on that system. So I'm wondering would the prime be a model that does not come with that? I also am about 200ish max on budget I'd really like to stay under 250 I'm willing to go about 220 if it is a really good reason.

I've never really had an asrock board can anyone tell me if their customer support is any good I tend to be very unlucky with electronics I tend to have to RMA all my parts at least once idk why. I know ASUS is considered top tier in motherboard but their customer service is one of the worst I've had to deal with so I'd like to avoid another company like that.

They're a great firm in my experience mate now.
4 years ago you would never ever have seen me recommend an asrock board but the last 3 years they have just been absolutely smashing it on the quality & price front.

The k4 & k6 series boards are just right up there.

Its always been gigabyte for me personally but the last 3 boards I've used have all been asrock.

Never had to RMA a board but their email response is real quick & you don't get generic copy/pastes .

You get a real person & they will try & work through any issues with you.

You are probably paying for features you won't use mate - you already said you had no intention of sli etc.

I pointed to the asrock because of the creative audio & Dolby via optical thinking you would probably use optical to connect your speakers.

The k4 is $30 cheaper, virtually the same in all respects including the audio but doesn't have USB 3.1 gen 2 or sli compatibility.

Its worth the extra over the Asus.

Okay well in the end i think it comes down to these 2 boards linked below, but when I look at them they look identical. It sounds like you've had a lot of good luck with Asrock so I might give them a shot thanks so much for all your help. I'll probably get whatever is cheaper when I can find a i7 7700k at 299 I'm hoping someone other than micro-center goes to that price sometime soon since I have none near me.

I have considered the Ryzens, but I really worry about all the benchmarks I've seen for gaming most of the benchmarks I've seen its getting smashed in gaming. I know it rocks everything else, but my computer is primarily a gaming machine so Ryzen kinda worries me, but maybe I'm being overly cautious cause I've had a lot of disappointment in AMD in past like 5 years lol.

If i did get Ryzen would u recommend the 1600x or the 1500x?

Also If i go ryzen would you recommend https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813157759. The only thing is a little bit worse audio chipset, but i noticed a lot of the AMD mobos for ryzen have lesser audio for some reason.

I fully understand your concern for a gaming rig but the thing is unless youre running a 144hz screen & insist on 120fps+ in every single game you play then the ryzens once overclocked to 3.8ghz (which is a cinch even on the included cooler) can sit from 80-100 fps in just about any title out there.
For me personally thats enough,Im happy on a 75htz screen myself & when I do upgrade my monitor itll be to 1440p rather than to one with a higher htz setting.

That is some hefty price difference there if you're happy with 80-100fps.

Well I do have a 144hz 1440p monitor and I already have a Noctua UH cooler so that is not an issue. Also curious why the 1600 flat over the 1600x especially if your ocing? I was thinking if I get a 1600x id OC it to 4.0ghz or is that not realistic?

Mainly because the ryzen x is $26 more & is exactly the same CPU but clocked higher out of the box.

You can get $20 for the wraith spire cooler on eBay if you dont want it which is close to $50 difference.

That said out of the box the 1600x is set to perform better & 'should' be better binned but I've seen no real evidence of that at all.

You're running 144htz then ??
I would have said stick with the Intel , fact is though you're also running 1440p & the 980ti you own is comfortable at 80-100fps that res.
That's also the same performance range of the ryzen chips so I think they'd actually do a damn good job for you.

What are you actually running system wise at the minute ??

At this very instance I am running an amd phenom II x6 1090T and it struggles to run even basic games from 2004 lol. I was getting 20-30 fps in games such as Kotor 2 so I can't do much with this machine. I think I might switch to Ryzen since it will save me so much money and i guess getting exactly 144 isn't the biggest deal.

I also worry about Ryzen though because I've heard nvidia cards do not mesh well with them and they bottleneck each other due to nvidias questionable drivers.

Okay I'm really leaning towards Ryzen since its so much more cost effective and It seems it'll do a good maybe not top tier, but still run well. I am wondering though I was looking at benchmarks of Ryzen since you mentioned them yesterday and I noticed the 1500 and 1600 have almost identical FPS in games so should I just save some money and get the 1500x since gaming is primarily what I do?

No mate , the 1600 is where its at IMO.
It comes at a 15% price premium for 33% more physical cores & threads

Its a no-brainer at that price difference IMO.

Those extra cores even if they're not needed now offer a lotbof theoretical future proofing.

Okay I will get a Ryzen with that as rock motherboard I showed earlier. I look to see if the price difference between the 1500x and 1600 if I could use that on better memory or something else. If It will make no difference in what I can get I'll get the 1600 thanks for all your help madmatt30.
