Can I set an optical drive out in the open?

I have a case http://www.corsair.com/en-us/landing/specalpha that doesn't have a optical drive bay, and I'm kind of new to pc building. I was just wondering if I could set the optical drive bay on top or in the hdd drive temporarily to install my os because I don't have a usb so I need to know if I can do this or not. Thank you.

Optical drive must be connected to motherboard and power supply. Leave the case open and put the drive next to it while OS is installed. Mechanical HDDs are pretty sensitive, do not put anything on it.
