Hey guys, as the title says, I've been gaming forever, but computer wise I've always been clueless. So here I am building my first computer and I'm sitting here wondering, how can I actually know if my motherboard / graphic card will fit in there? I haven't picked the case yet, I'm opened to suggestion, I dont feel like spending money on a case but if you guys manage to give me good pros... Here is the part list (I put them all in case you guys want to suggest other parts, who knows?)

Budget ? $1500 - $1600 Canadian assumed
Playing resolution ? 1080p assumed
Other uses ? none assumed
Storage requirement ? 2 TB

Could save $40 w/ 2400 memory
Could save $60 if not looking for more than moderate OC
I don't see 7700 / 7700k unless you use workstation or video editing apps.
If more than 1080p. would want bigger card

Nothing stands out particular, just need a case that supports up to 160mm CPU cooler and 290mm GPU card with HDD cage and ATX motherboard. Which is to say, too many mid tower cases would fit the bill. What are you after? Brand? Aesthetic? Silence? Great Airflow? Bling bling RGB?

1. ATX boards will require an ATX case

2. The specs tab of your GFX card link, list the card size as 10.50" x 4.38" ... so you need a case that fits 10.5" (267mm) cards

3. The cooler dimensions from your link are: 116.00 x 51.00 x 159.mm so you need a case that fits 159mm

I'd recommend that you get a P400 or P400S from Phanteks (nothing else comes close in this price range) which according to the link (specs tab) has:

Max CPU Cooler Height Allowance = 160 mm
Max GPU Length Allowance 395mm / 280mm (Optional HDD brackets installed)

As to your build ...

1. I wouldn't pair a Z270 MoBo w/ a non K series processor ... your paying a ton of money for overclocking features on that MoBo and the CPU doesn't support overclocking

I'd pair an MSI Z270 SLI Plus w/ a 7700k
or
MSI Tomahawk w/ a 7700

2. I'd stay away from the SC / SSC series from EVGA ... I'd take one of the 9.7 pr 9.8 ones here
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/#1060

3. I'd avoid that PSU, if you want EVGA pick a B2, G2, G3, P2, ... Seasonic S12 / M12 620

All the comments are appreciated, but I'd like to know the why behind all these suggestions!!

Most of the why's were already provided:

Case:

1. The same reason why a 1/4" bolt fits in a 1/4" nut, why a 17" tire goes on a 17" rim.

2. As above ... a 10.8" long card can't fit in a 10.5" wide space

3. As above

Build:

1.a Again, you'd want to plug in a 120v appliance into a 120v socket. Your very expensive mobo includes features that the CPU is incapable of delivering.

Use Z270 w/ 7700k
Use H270 w/ 7700

1.b As was explained in the link below, for this price range, n your price range, the MSI SLI Plus series set the baseline standard in this price range. The article is about the previous generation Z170 board, and the new chipset doesn't change that.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/10236/the-msi-z170a-sli-plus-review

2. Historically, the EVGA SC series has simply been a "nVidia reference card", witha better cooler and a significant prce premium. And while that price premium for other AIB suppliers includes numerous PCB improvements w/ beefier componentry in addition to an improved cooler, all you get for the same price from EVGA is the better cooler.

3. It's a weak design and there are better alternatives in the price range

Jack, your expertise is not questionable, hence why I'd like you to message me in private if you could for further questionning. I would like you to build my computer from scratch.
