CPU Overheating, How great is the damage?

Short version{
I got blackscreen due to overheating when I played a new game. I checked and cpu temperature was at 98 degrees C. Now when I play my old games, I also get the Blackscreen problem(Temperature at 85C).

I currently think my cpu might be too damaged to play any of my games and will need to be replaced. But could there be other complications/things to keep in mind?
Could other components be damaged?
Or could it be another problem altogether?

Processor : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770k @ 3.50GHz 3.50GHz
Cooler on cpu: Intel E97378-001
Ram: 16Gb
Operating system: windows 7 64-bit
Graphics card: N760 TF 2GD5/OC
Power supply: cx750
Motherboard: GA-Z87P-D3
}
Long version{
I got “ME Andromeda” recently and found that my long running problem with low RAM finally became too much, so I upgraded from 8 to 16 Gb. Fast Forward one week and suddenly when I start playing, within 10 min my screens go black and I get the distinctive windows message bleep. Audio continues for about 10 seconds before also quieting down, and my screens shuts down due to not receiving any signal.

I lost connection to my gpu after this, but that is a normal problem for me and I fixed it without too much problems(the card bends over time and I need to twist my computer from time to time).
So I started the game thinking all was well, but it continued to happen. After searching for solutions I came across the tip that It could be overheating, so I checked that with the Open Hardware Monitor and found that temperature(processor) rose to 98-100 degrees C when I played the game(it’s 40 degrees C at the time of writing this).

To further test temperature I tried playing some Heroes of the storm, which I have always been able to play without the slightest sign of problem. The temperature turned out to be at aproximetly 85 degrees C when that game was running. And after about 16 minutes of this I got the Black screen problem again.
}
Final solution{
I changed the thermal paste, this caused the temperature to go down, but I still got blackscreen. I then reinstalled my grapic drivers again and after that temperature have been at safe levels and I'm yet to recieve any blackscreens.

Solution
Yeah safe bet not to carry on playing games if your getting the black screen due to overheating because I upgraded my CPU and I put to much off the paste on and when playing games my temperature went to 100 and i just shut my computer off. Your CPU could be damaged and suggest taking it out wipe the paste off and replay it again that could be one reason why your CPU temp so high to much thermal paste or it could be your cooler not working right!

Anyway i think if the CPU damaged would the computer even turn on so check the cooler and clean off the thermal paste from the CPU and the cooler and put pea size thermal paste back on and also make sure there no dust in the fans off cooler!

The damage is not instant in most cases, but progressive. It's not good to run ANY CPU over 80c for long. 70 or less preferably, but you need to know your processor's personal limit (found somewhere online or in the manual).

It seems a common myth is to use less than a human hair's width of paste. Use more, frankly, as most heatsinks on and for the CPU are not flat enough for such a thin layer.

Helps to force a higher default CPU fan speed, too. Mine is stock at 30%, but the temp spikes are intense this way. I recommend 45% minimum, 75% for good measure. You will want enough exhaust, too. I know fan noise is not cool, but without a little, neither are any of your parts.

Unsolicited advice: HDDs are also best around or just above room temperature. 25c-35c for longevity, 40c cap. There was a myth at one point that 42-48c was good because of maximizing lubrication, but no.

You need to buy a better fan and heatsink setup. Also a pea size of thermal paste is enough right in the middle of the cpu. It will spread when the heatsink is installed. The cpu will shut down automatically if it starts to get too hot.

The 4770 runs hot. That cooler is not sufficient even at stock speeds if you are gaming with it. I notice you do not mention the gpu temp. If you are getting a black screen without the computer shutting down it is a good indication that the gpu is causing the problem.

Question: Where you able to bring up the Task Manager by hitting control/alt/delete. Right after you got the black screen. Or was the computer frozen.

@Urbancamper and OP: I have had the "pea" not coat corners. I use an ID card or credit card for spreading evenly. Another effective option is to use two crecents of paste, applied like so. ) (

Few pastes retain air, but the "pea" applied after an especially thin card spreading can alleviate worry.

@OP. Don't use AS5, it is dated and overrated. Gelid Extreme is creamy, non-conductive, and more efficient.

The quoted guy was right to mention the GPU. If it doesn't void your warranty, remove the heatsink and apply your own paste.

computer froze, couldn't bring up taskmanager or tab out to check whatever warning I got from windows

Also I clean the dust our quite often and did so again when the problem first arose.

The gpu were at seemingly safe temperatures relative to the cpu, below 60(rather it was so low that I didn't look enough to remember the number)
