Super excited to have my first android ever, and to have unlimited data! Long story short, I do not have another means of accessing internet in my house. I wanted to use usb tethering, downloaded the driver from samsung 's main web page, but when I connect my phone to the computer via usb, my computer lags and becomes unbearably slow. As soon as I pull the usb out, the pc goes back to normal and runs fast again. On top of this I still can 't get tethering to work!

Specs:
Samsung Galaxy S8

Pc: Windows 10
i-5 6600k
8gb RAM
128gb ssd+ 500gb hdd
MSI Z170A mobo

Part of your issue getting tethering to work may be the so called "unlimited" plan. Many ISP restrict the unlimited to only data the phone itself is using and even then they sometimes have fine print about what types of data they really allow. Many decide you can only watch so much video etc.

Read the contract very carefully to see what if any restrictions they place on tethered data. Do not think you can trick them, in addition to knowing your phone is in tethered mode they actually do deep packet inspections on data. They can read the browser headers and tell that you are running say win 10, they can even tell the resolution of your screen etc because the web browser sends all this information in the clear.

What they actually...

I think carriers try to limit (or eliminate) tethering, so that might be part of the problem (carrier settings making it inconvenient to tether).

Rooting could be an option, but ss202sl's suggestion of a hotspot might be the simplest option - it's not like wifi is going to add any more latency than you'll already see with a mobile data plan.

What they actually do about it depends on what the contract says, some nail you for a huge data charge other degrade the speed so it is almost unusable.
