So recently Ive been trying to install OS X 10.6 on an old Mac Pro A1186 1,1 I got my hands on. However it fails to install after about 5-10min with the error saying "cannot copy necessary support files" Not sure what to do. I dont know what firmware it is but I can find out.

If it's an Intel Mac it will be supported.

Is your install disk a retail copy? Where did you get it from? If it is one supplied with a Mac (like many of the ones for sale on eBay) it will be specific to the model it was supplied with. So you need either a retail copy or a disk intended for your specific model.

I bought it off amazon and its the same package I had to buy for our imac core 2 duo system awhile back. So it is retail.
