Can I buy a new hard drive without migrating programs?

Out of simple curiosity, and apologies if this is already answered somewhere, if i were to buy a new SSD and Install Windows on that, would all my programs on my currently existing HDD still function properly? Would i HAVE to reinstall them, or would they work just fine without moving them to the new drive?

Solution
The easy answer is no. They will not function anymore because the fresh Win install won't know how to locate them or what to do with them. There are a few exceptions, but it will be best to do a clean install.

There are migration programs available to migrate your HDD to the SSD, but the SSD has to have room for the amount of data you intend to migrate. If you can shrink your HDD usage down to fit on the SSD, it will be an easy process of cloning.
