Is it worth upgrading from i5 4440 to i3 7100

I feel that it's time for me to upgrade my system again to keep up with the newer generation. I heard that the 7th gen i3 can match the performance of 4th gen i5? Will it be able to handle games as well as the i5 like Ghost Recon Wildlands?

My current specs are:

CPU: i5 4440
GPU: GTX 1060 6GB
RAM: 8GB DDR3
1TB HDD
450W PSU

No need for an upgrade. With a 7100 your going to see maybe a 5% performance boost, which is not worth having to replace your CPU/Mobo/RAM.
With a 4440 and a 1060 6GB you should run 95% of todays games fine @1080p.

Complete waste of money.

If your system plays your games well going to a 7100 isn't going to help you one but. If you said i5-7600k I'd say maybe, otherwise, complete waste of money.

Not to mention that Ghost Recon Wildlands is pretty CPU intensive, meaning that those 2 extra cores with the i5 are going to help.

The i3 is only a temporary solution. I will move to i5 7500 and install the i3 on the other Kaby Lake motherboard waiting for a CPU.

Why not just upgrade on your current platform? Haswell is still competitive and it isn't worth all the extra cost to convert to Kaby Lake.

I live in Australia, and not many online retail sites such as PC Case Gear sell brand new 4th gen CPU's (Except i5 4590 which is too pricey compared to i5 7500). I only prefer brand new and not second hand.

After thinking about it all day, I have finally come down to a verdict. I agree that upgrade is going to be a complete waste of money, so I shall stay with what I have, and just save more for the i5 7600. Thanks for the help!
