I am running an Asus Z-97A / USB 3.1 motherboard (https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z97AUSB_31/specifications/) together with an older OCZ 256GB SATA 3 SSD that is only for purposes of running my OS (Windows 10) and has read and write speeds of roughly 450-500 MB/S.
Today I was about to buy a Samsung 960 EVO 250GB PCIe SSD to move my OS over onto it since they are relatively inexpensive now and have read and write speeds that are about 3 times faster than my existing SSD. I figured it would do two things for me:
1 - Speed up boot time of my OS and loading of large programs like Photoshop.
2 - Free up a SATA3 slot on my MB for the addition of another 4TB SATA 3 HDD for data storage in the future.
Then at the shop where I was going to buy the EVO 960 today the guy told me if my MB doesn't support NVMe then the SSD might not run on my MB at all. I also read a bit more about the specs of my MB and realized that the PCIe 3.0 slot is only 2 lanes and not 4 and that I wouldn't probably get the full speed out of this EVO 960 drive.
Then I read some other older threads on forums where people were also saying I may only get read and write speeds of about 500MB out of this Samsung EVO 960 drive, same as what I got now, so, so far, I haven't bought anything.
I have 2 questions to help me decide what would be best to do:
1 - Are there any 256GB SSD drives that are PCIe based, which are 2 lane that I can hook up to my MB, which are designed for the specs of my MB, and would give me read and write speeds that are faster than what I am getting now, which is only about 500 MB/S?
2 - Is there a cheaper and lower spec PCIe SSD than the Samsung EVO 960 that would at least give me comparable read and write speeds to what I have now of 500 MB with my OCZ SSD so that I can still free up a SATA slot on my MB, but for less money than buying a Samsung EVO 960, which around $125 at the moment?
Thanks for any insight and input you might kindly be able to offer.
