How can I differentiate between a PSU problem or a GPU problem? PC suddenly powers down and restarts

Starting from early April, my 4 year old PC has started randomly powering off then restarting automatically, sometimes when playing games, and sometimes when merely just installing games. There is no BSOD and no useful event logs, other than telling me it was an unexpected loss of power.

I have finally been able to consistently cause the shut down by attempting to run Furmark; the PC powers down/crashes instantly when clicking the start button. The PC was able to run IntelBurnTest and Memtest86 successfully. Is this a PSU or a GPU problem, and how can I differentiate between them? I don't have any replacement components on hand.

psu wouldn't be aple to open the Dekstop on the first hand, if it was due to low wattage, or wreckage - out of order
Gpu probably hits high temps and shuts off for safety, either that , or change its thermal compound with a new one
thats my main thoughts

Given you've mentioned IBT, Memtest and Furmark, sounds like your OC'ing your system!? If so maybe try running everything at stock to see if you have the same problem. If your PSU is 4 yrs old, and you've been running an OC on your system, chances are the PSU has degraded a sufficient amount, that it can't give you the required power for a stable system. Try reset to stock, see what happens. after that I'd be of the opinion it's the PSU.

No OC as far as I can tell, CPU-Z screenshot here http://imgur.com/a/tBwrn

Honestly I have never run any stress tests on this PC before today!

Okay, that rules out that so. Your FSP PSU is not the best. Its a relatvely cheap PSU with only mediocre performance, lookng at some of the reviews. It might be it's going through the throws of dying on you. I'd suggest getting a new one. SR-71 is the resident PSU expert on Tom's, maybe he can suggest a good quality one to purchase.
