I am upgrading my cpu from an outdated A10 5800k to the Ryzen 5 1400. I would like to also upgrade my ram to DDR4. I am a poor college student so $110 seems like a lot to pay for 2x8gb of DDR4 ram. Will I see a significant decrease in performance if I get a single 8 gb DDR4 stick now? I am planning to add another 8gb in the future. My second question, would 2x4gb be sufficient?

Why does one want higher clocked ram ?
higher clocked ram benefits most only with overclocking higher end parts, even then he'd prolly get 10% more with OC n stuff , and if he is gaming then that 10% amounts to 6 fps at 1080p.
higher clocked ram isnt important unless one is deadset on juicing everything out with OC.
If its in budget fair n well , else those listed rams should be fine

I am looking at three bundles

https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.3482366

Do you think it is worth it to get a dual slot motherboard and put 8gb of DDR4 in it or should I get the bundle with 16 gb of ram?

One 8GB stick is fine for a start. If you want to go to 16GB later, you either need to be very careful getting the same model or getting a set of two 8GB sticks.

You want to avoid using four DIMMS down the road. Ryzen clearly states that memory runs slower in all four slots. Either get one 8GB or two 4GB sticks but if you want more memory size later on, plan to ditch the two 4GB sticks in favor of two 8s. Your budget is an issue, for sure, but get the fastest RAM you can afford, whatever the configuration.

4slot mobo 8gb 2x4 dual channel. is what I would do because then you can still upgrade to 16 without hampering performance in the mean time.
You want B side Samsung die @ 3200mhz .

you can oc ram too ! but be carefull what ram to pick also make sure your mobo bios has good ram oc support. most b350 mobos has entry level ram oc options you would want an 370 board for better oc i guess, some 1 correct me though im not too sure

Do you have any suggestions for ram and mobo? Would the bundle I listed have sufficient ram?

the MSI B350M Gaming PRO is decent for your r5 1400.
though as you can see it dosent have good heatsink on the mosfets plus i believe thats a 3 phase vrm design which i would not have for 24/7 hefty overclock.

but for a 4 core its OK.

for ram all i can say is stick POSITIVELY to the mobo manufaturers QVL list.
ram situation is very finicky with ryzen to say the least
if you are buying that bundle first make sure those listed ram are in the QVL list.

For ryzen cpu PLS DO NOT CHOOSE A RAM WITH A CLOCK OF ABOVE 2660MHz as ryzen cpus will just cost the ram to clock down to 2144MHz if the ram clock is above 2660Mhz and it will be a waste of money
