Probably some basic thing I'm not aware of so anything helps.

I bought a new router due to a lot of dropped connections and locking up, having to reset the router at least once a day really, and so I bring this new one home.

The old ISP provided one was using a coaxial connection, but the new one only had ethernet ports so I plug that in, but the modem seems to not be communicating with the router now.

To be clear, its just saying there's a connection issue somewhere between the internet and the router.

Solution
You usually have to power up the modem with the router already plugged in. The mac address of the old router is still registered in the modem. If that still doesn't work you might need to do mac cloning shenanigans or call your ISP reset the modem's registered mac.

So basically plug in the new router, reboot modem by unplugging modem wait 10 secs with power unplugged, leave router network cable plugged in to it, power up modem.

That depends, I have a Netgear router, I have to turn on the router first then cable modem.
you just need to try either one to see which works. I had TP-Link router before which I have to turn on the modem first then router.
