Which computer is better for database work and Excel spreadsheets? These databases and spreadsheets are extensive. The spreadsheets are query pulls from multiple databases. Just wondering if straight processor speed is better or if the extra ram is more beneficial.

i7-4770 @3.40GHz with 4GB Ram

or

i5-4590 @3.30GHz with 8GB ram

Solution

The PC I use at work is an older i5 with 4GB of RAM. I have yet to see the CPU come even close to maxing out with multiple spreadsheets, a browser, VS, Acrobat Reader, and several other windows. What I do experience is Running RAM to its limit and feeling the burn of virtual RAM kicking in. (If you have experienced it, you know what I mean, if you haven't, well... lets say it feels like waiting for water to boil while watching it.

As I said before, RAM is more important, especially if options in RAM is 4GB (or worse, less) or a minimum of 8GB... 8GB or more of RAM wins. (unless you get down to an ancient 8088 vs Pentium G4560...

I'd lean towards the extra RAM. For general computing and excel spreadsheets the i5 is hardly going to let you down whereas the RAM potentially can if you are going to have more than a few applications open including those in the background. Hope this helps :)
