But, but... the PCIe lanes?!

this pcie stuff has me all confused. i'm gonna get these...

ASUS ROG Maximus IX Code LGA1151

asus rog strix OC 1080ti
https://www.amazon.com/ROG-STRIX-GTX1080TI-O11G-GAMING-GeForce-DisplayPort-Overclocked-Graphics/dp/B06XXZBPHZ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1495132423&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+rog+1080+ti

samsung M.2 960 EVO NVME 500gb
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147594&cm_re=960_m.2-_-20-147-594-_-Product

also adding in 3 drives i already had. a samsung 850 500gb ssd sata, a Crucial 256gb ssd, and a Seagate 2TB

from what i can tell from descriptions, the M.2 will use some PCIe lanes. does it share lanes w/ my GPU? do the other drives take away lanes from the gpu?
basically, i don't want the gpu performance hampered by any drives. so will this setup cause diminished performance in gaming at all? thanks

The CPU has 16 PCI-E lanes reserved for the graphics. The motherboard ( Z270 ) has 14 PCI-E lanes as a general purpose setup.

That board specifies : "**When the M.2_2 Socket 3 is operatin in PCIe 3.0 x4 mode, SATA ports 5 and 6 will be disabled."

So using the 960 Pro will lose you 2 SATA ports. That's an improvement over my Z170 motherboard. I have a 950 Pro and it disables 4 of my 6 Intel chipset based SATA ports. Gigabyte boards always have another third party SATA controller with 2 ports but they're not as fast as the Intel controlled ports.

So TL;DR no, you don't lose graphics potential by adding the 960. ;)

thanks so much! i wasn't sure if the any of the 4 drives or other stuff also used pcie at all.
so what all actually uses pcie? gpus, wifi cards?

so i think that mobo has 6 sata ports. and the m.2 will take up 2. then i also have 3 other drives in there (2 ssds, 1 hdd). so that means i only have 1 spot left for a drive in the future?

Scroll down to Applications.

Yes, One open SATA port after you connect those 3 devices.
