Can't launch games/change resolution due to driver issues

Hi everyone,

Today I experienced an issue and it started with me trying to launch a game (CS:GO). The game simply didn't launch, it opened for a brief second (black screen) and shut straight away. I did the basics and verified my game files and restarted my pc and steam and I still had no luck. Multiple other games don't work too.

After an hour or so of troubleshooting, nothing was working. Eventually I came across a thread that said that windows resolution can cause this, so I went ahead and went to 'screen resolution' and I noticed that I couldn't change my resolution. It was greyed out and unclickable. It used to be. So that's when I figured that it was an issue with my drivers so I uninstalled all my graphics drivers (AMD R9 200) and reinstalled them. It still didn't work. After repeating this multiple times, I realised that I am able to change the resolution when the drivers are not installed. I am also able to launch the game when the drivers are not installed however once I install the drivers neither work. What could be the issue here?

tldr: Can't change resolution with drivers installed, can't launch games with drivers installed. CAN change resolution with no drivers installed, CAN launch games with no drivers installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

  5. Thanks for the response. I have been using DDU to uninstall and then reinstall the drivers. I've tried using AMD's 'autodetectutility' to download drivers and also downloaded them manually from the AMD site. What other drivers should I try?

  6. Different(older) versions of the AMD drivers. Also might try re-seating the GPU. It' s possible that the GPU has died.

Hi. I just installed some older AMD drivers (17.5.1) and my monitor drivers and also re-seated my GPU. Still having the same issue. One thing that is confusing though is that when I check my currently installed drivers in AMD Radeon Settings, it displays my drivers as 17.10.2711 which are the newest AMD drivers. Even though I installed the older 17.5.1 drivers. Is this because my drivers are somehow being automatically updated?
    Thanks for the help :)

  8. I have this exact same issue and I've been unable to find a solution for months. I'm using a driver from 2015 on my r9 290x cause its the only one that will work but its starting to cause issues with playersunknown battlegrounds after each game update.

I too have greyed out resolution options for windows (with new driver), games fail to launch and when they do they have no resolution options.

And every thread I see just ends with no resolution and barely any replies like this one.
