Hi,
No idea where to put this.. decided this may be the best place.

I have a g7 dl120 proliant server. I'm looking to change the power supply(or modify it) It has a 24 pin hp connector on the motherboard. The power supply also has sensors which detect temperature. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing? No idea where to find the pinout for the power supply.

It is 400w, planning to either us a gtx 960, gtx 1050ti or rx 560. Any thoughts on this (power requirements)
The processor is a Xeon e3 1220.
If I can't get a new power supply working with it then I was thinking of replacing the fan (as this is main problem.. it's very very very noisy. Trust me.) it's 40mm 7 watt, I wa staining I could use a 120mm fan and use a shroud to direct the airflow to a 40*40mm "area" and increasing the airs velocity (hopefully to a similar order that the previous fan was doing)

Thanks :)
(Building a super budget "console killer")

Any discusuion welcome

Hello... Well IF being a 2 wire DC fan means it's speed is directly related to the Voltage input... If you can lower the voltage to the fan and it will run slower. Typically there will be +12Vdc fans in a computer... connecting the fan between the PS yellow/red wires will give you about 7vdc... red/black 5 Vdc. Also you can mod with a resistor or potentiometer to achieve any voltage/speed in between.

Being a "server" means there was extra/special cooling and high speed "fan noise" that a typical "home" user would not encounter with use... Also the use of 'gaming" video cards was not intended for the MB... You only have PCIe 2.0 rated slots, but it should still be a "console killer" B D

The GTX 960 will need 120 watts from the +12vdc...
Hello... 1) Take picture of the PS label for us and post it.
1b) I expect powers supplies for this server model should be plentiful. B /
2) you have a 80 watt CPU... https://ark.intel.com/products/52269/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1220-8M-Cache-3_10-GHz
2b) The CPU and GPU's will need +12Vdc watts from the PS.
3) Yes it is very easy to change FANs and Fan sizes... how many wire fan is it now? what does the fan cool?

here is the image,
and it is just a two wire fan. I'm wondering if the 120mm fan will be any quieter with the shroud.
Fan is cooling the power supply components. it has some aluminium heat sinks which the air passes before exiting

Hello... Thanks B )

Basically a larger fan will require less rpm to move the same amount of air than a smaller one... so this will reduce "Fan spinning noise" B / Fan bearings typically wear out faster than most other computer devices and is a simple replace/fix.

4) can you post picture of the current fan in question and the mounting/use of it?

5) so your reason for PS change is for what?
a) fan noise?
b) GPU power?
c ) both?
d) other?

I think the bearings are fine in the fan, its just very powerful and probably inefficient.. The picture I sent shows where th fan is, the black section. Its 40 by 40 mm so mounting of a bigger fan is impossible without some custom parts. I was thinking of (ideally) 3d printing a shroud which a 120mm fan attaches to and then narrows the airflow to a 40mm area.
so
5a) yes - its unbearable to be in a normal living space
b) yeah I'm not sure if it would power a gtx 960.. athough the 12v rail does have a fairly good maximum current
C) so yes

The GTX 960 will need 120 watts from the +12vdc rail http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GTX+960

So with the CPU that will be 200 watts or 200/12=16.7 amps from it... so you should be good with that PS +12Vdc 27A rail. B )

Hello... You can also get a lower RPM 40x40 12 Vdc fan to the reduce noise... read the label spec on it for RPM info... you have a 'industrial high speed" server fan B )

And you can also place masking tape between the Fan and the power supply as a "isolator"... and add some thin foam to the metal case and corners to stop "reflective" high freq noise. B /
