Is my motherboard or ram dead?

I've reapplied Arctic Silver 5 on my CPU, i couldn't get my waterblock off of my cpu because something was lose at the back. I held it tight with pliers but i slipped and accidentally scratched my MOBO slightly. After i reattached my waterblock onto my CPU i bumped my hand against my RAM module a few times on accident.

Now my pc detects 16GB of ram but only 8 gigs of it is usable.

I pulled my RAM Modules out of the slots and put them back in and still the same results. i haven't checked my BIOS yet to see if it shows 16GB of ram or 8GB, I'm pretty sure it will show 8 gigs.

Could it be my MOBO or my ram Module?

Figure out which memory slots are working and swap the RAM modules in and out.

Use the Windows Memory Diagnostic or some third party utility if necessary. Failing that then very methodically swap modules around.

If one RAM module works in a slot and another RAM module fails to work in that slot then the problem may be the RAM module.

As for the scratching the location and depth of the scratch will determine the level of damage if any.

If you have broken any trace or maybe even just part of the trace then the motherboard may be down for. Unless you have been really lucky and damaged something not at all being used.

And check the BIOS to be sure if it see 16 GB or 8 GB - what ever is revealed (good or bad) may help resolve the...
