I'm planning on upgrading my cpu and motherboard, switching from AMD to intel. I want to get an i5 7400, which mobo is cheapest and can still support the cpu? How hard is it to use all the same components but switching the cpu and mobo? Will my pc be able to run properly/even start?

Thanks

Solution
i5-7400 uses an LGA1151 socket so you will need a motherboard with that socket. The cheapest mobo with the corresponding socket is probably: https://www.consolekiller.co.uk/asus-am1i-a.html?gclid=CPGLtKrz_NMCFQ3hGwodG-wAYQ

Make sure your RAM is will work with your motherboard (for example, if it only supports DDR3, Dont use DDR4 memory)

Also, if youre going SLI/CF, make sure the board supports it

All your components should run the same as before and other than that, you are good to go! Good luck and Happy building :)

you probably have to buy new ram as the i5 7400 uses DDR4, other than that your OS wont work when you replace the mobo, you will need the OS install disk/usb to get the drivers to load and if you have an oem licence you will need to activate a new licence (buy a new licence) otherwise your windows will be an unregistered copy.

Is better to do a clean install when you change the mobo, to avoid registry and drivers issues and underperformance doe to it.

Now have you checked the new AMD ryzen cpus? they are worth checking before rushing to intel.

If the OP has Win 10 Anniversary edition and up, then the license will transfer with the MS login.

Go with a B250 motherboard and DDR 4 RAM. Try to sell your DDR 3 if you can.

My computer first came with a Win 8 and I got the free upgrade to Win 10, would I still be able to use the Win 10?

And does a clean install mean deleting everything on my hard drive?

Keep in mind you can always move your important files to a secondary HDD or any storage for that matter
