Hi
I have a Xeon e3 1220,
Is there any reason why I couldn't use a Xeon 1245 v2, for example?
Same socket, just wondering if there are chipset/ other things that I don't know about.
Thanks

Hello... There is device id's and instructions when identified, as to how to handle them... that is why buying personal/consumer 'brand name" MB's can give you better product support, future product support and longevity B /

A company can add more servers to their system... rent them or write a check for new models... so the BIO's and upgradability are not the norm with these users and products.

Yes... the first generation Xeons sucked in performance VS the V2 & V3 models... I have E3 1240 V2 in a 70 series Gigabyte MB... find yourself a used 60-70 series MB with V2 compatibility and your there? OR get yourself a used i7 3000 series and they are near the same thing B )

Hello... I understand "good deals" too... B D and upgradability... I stayed away from the servers MB's for reasons stated above... but they were very tempting at times in my early days...

basically intel with the Xeons, and i7-i3 cores, needed a boost at the same time... and those E3, 3000 series cpus are basically the same internals and you got the best of both worlds for a change in performance... so the same CPU in the same MB's... and adding the used server market discounts... I got a i7 3770 type device for a mere pittance in that time in history... my first "Xeon" B D... maybe my last?
