How many years would the top of the line parts today last me? I'm asking because I plan on building a PC and I'm not rich so anything I buy has to last I just don't have extra money. I've never owned a PC If I save for the best parts how many years could it give me? THANK YOU for any help!

Tops would be 4-5 years. Previously I had a FX-6300 and a GTX 970, and despite how old the FX core is, it lasted me 3 years and a half until I upgraded to a Skylake-K i5, and changed the GPU this year, since it exploded on me. So yeah, for normal usage and gaming, with current parts, you'll fare fine for 4-5 years :)

It is sort of impossible to tell what will work for YOU.

Let's assume a 5 year life, with your current use case.
What will you be doing in 5 years? Will you still be playing high end games? Or maybe other bits of life intrude, and you no longer have the time for that.

In general terms, 5 years.

Honestly, it's impossible to say. A program you use could work awesome today, get patched tomorrow, and now it runs like crap. My system is around six or seven years old and while it can still handle normal tasks (I don't do too much anymore), it's long in the tooth for gaming.

If you think about it most basic tasks can be done by your phone. We are quickly reaching the point where a PC will be for high end gaming only, and only if you don't want to use your Xbox or Playstation. I'm not suggesting PCs will die out (though it's possible to live quite well without one.) But if you have a high end phone and an Xbox or Playstation I could see not even having a PC.

I mention this because like Ecky, if your uses aren't large enough, a 10yo PC is fine. Or the PC you build now will be enough for the rest of your life.
