Hi, I have the option to install AMD processor microcode firmware for AMD CPUs while using Linux Mint 18.1. The code is ' amd64-microcode version 2.20160316.1'. Can anyone tell me what this is and suggest whether I should install it or not?

I have an A8 7600 CPU and a MSI A68HM Grenade motherboard with BIOS 1.4, which I believe is the latest version.

It seems to be a critical security update to correct issues affecting some amd cpu's. This is a quote from the changelog for that microcode update:

"THIS IS A CRITICAL STABILITY AND SECURITY UPDATE FOR THE EARLIER
AMD PILEDRIVER PROCESSORS, including:
+ AMD Opteron 3300, 4300, 6300
+ AMD FX "Vishera" (43xx, 63xx, 83xx, 93xx, 95xx)
+ AMD processors with family 21, model 2, stepping 0"

I'm not sure that it affects you since you're using a different cpu, it's not an opteron nor an fx vishera, it's a kaveri apu. The last line says processors with family 21, model 2 and stepping 0. The a8 7600 is stepping kv-a1, model r7. I doubt it would cause any issues if you did install it but doesn't seem to provide any benefit...

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I am much happier now as I perhaps won't need to install it. I might try it and see if anything changes. There is a revert button in the Linux Mint driver installation window.
