Dear all,

I have a nigh 8 year old pre-built PC made up of:-
i7 quadcore Intel processor, Gigabyte EX58-D54, 6gb memory, 2x ATI Radeon HD 4870, HD 931GB.

I have an issue where I intermittently get vertical visual distortion. I tested my graphic cards and it appears ok. However I used the Intel processor diagnostic tool and what I got was:-

--- IPDT64 - Revision: 4.0.0.29
--- IPDT64 - Start Time: 20/05/2017 15:25:31

--------------------------------------------------------------------
-- Testing
--------------------------------------------------------------------
CPU 1 - SPBC - Pass.
CPU 1 - Genuine Intel - Pass.
CPU 1 - BrandString - Pass.
CPU 1 - Floating Point - Pass.
CPU 1 - Prime Number - Pass.
CPU 1 - Cache - Pass.
CPU 1 - MMXSSE - Pass.
CPU 1 - FMA - Pass.
CPU 1 - AVX - Pass.
CPU 1 - IMC - Fail.

IPDT64 Failed
--- IPDT64 - Revision: 4.0.0.29
--- IPDT64 - End Time: 20/05/2017 15:25:43

--------------------------------------------------------------------
FAIL
What has failed, why and how do I remedy it?

thanks,

Nasir

IMC = Integrated Memory Controller, means the memory controller is built into the CPU. This is the per design in Intel's i7 CPU. It is also the reason why the specification of supported RAM mainly depends on the CPU, not the motherboard. I suggest running memtest64 as it could be an issue with accessing the RAM if we dig deeper.

how do i test with 1 stick? do you mean that this will help me find out which of the sticks is faulty? btw windows memory test came back w/o any errors.

memtest is a much more stringent test than windows memory test. You can try memtest, it takes hours to overnight to run. You may get errors on memtest and have to pull all but one stick of RAM at a time and test each one.

6GB would be standard for the i7-9xx CPUs they were triple channel memory controllers.

Not sure how many sticks i have. I only started getting problems recently. all worked fine till now. The problem with memtest86 was that I cannot send the damn file to my usb stick!

I ran IPDT64 - Revision: 4.1.0.31 and it failed the IMC.exe test continuously. I read a post on Linustechtips Link: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/608834-cpu-failed-imc-test-is-this-bad/ and followed the advice. I uninstalled IPDT64 Version 4.1.0.31 and installed IPDT64 Version 4.1.0.27 and it passed all tests including the IMC test. Therefore the problem might be a software one relating to the newer version of the Tool rather than a hardware one. Try version 27.
